THE HIDDEN ONES FACTION STARTER SET

Servants of the submerged Pantheon, the Downworlders live in coastal towns and villages around the world. Through corruption and interbreeding, the Downworlders inextricably link their community to the sea and the Terrible Father Dagon, the Deep Mother Hydra and the other ancient deities they worship. The transformation of villages into barren cities has forced the Downworlders to push further into the shadows and pushed them to isolated communities where it is easier to go unnoticed. Families may prey on their neighbors, seeing them as little more than talkative sheep ready to be slaughtered. Food is no problem for these ancient bloodlines that lurk among the rest of us and their numbers are growing with each cycle.

Typical of these contaminated communities are the abysmally twisted inhabitants of Dunsmouth, Rhode Island. Authority over almost everything in the city is a putrid witch known as The Witch of Dunsmouth. Rooted in the most ancient legends, no one knows its true origin, but the Witch has certainly lived in Dunsmouth for over a century. Popular gossip says that a century earlier, a much younger and more beautiful woman, mourning her dead son, had entered the sea in hopes of quick oblivion. He returned with a crying child, a gift from the submerged Pantheon. That son has grown tall and strong, with the blessings of the depths appearing evident under his rain-soaked oilcloth hat. Any threat to the Downworlders will surely find The Witch of Dunsmouth or her son, The Fisherman, within easy reach. The Fisherman is a gruff and violent man. Never seen in the city, except when the tide is high and death is close at hand. Too often the specter of the Fisherman is the last thing a victim sees before a blood-encrusted harpoon drags him down to feed oblivion.

Those who are steadfast in their devotion to the submerged Pantheon are often blessed with children touched by the abyss below. These hybrids pass for humans, except when confronted with fire or some words of power. There are some children of the Downworlders who have no such mixed heritage. The Angler is one such creature, born of a human mother but with no trace of humanity in her own flesh. The Angler is both the daughter of Dunsmouth and the progenitor of the deep. A true belonging to the Submerged.

Loyal to her mother and father, Molly Malone, she is desperate for such a favor. The Malone family has served the Submerged Pantheon for generations. The youngest of twelve siblings, Molly feared there would be no way she herself could bring further honor to her lineage. She thanked the stars for that night when the Witch sought her out and gave her this important task. The titanic crab, Click-Clack, must be lured out of the harbor when needed. Collecting the bucket of human entrails necessary for this is Molly's privileged role, which she plays by gutting the sleeping homeless and passing visitors in their beautiful city. An immense crustacean hailing from the dark caves of the depths, Click-Clack is often found clinging to the underside of the city's fishing boats. There the creature hides, traveling to the fishing grounds and feasting on its tithe of the catch before returning to town each night to answer the call of the Terror and the Deep.
